Frequently Asked Questions
| Question: How Long Should I Nurse My Baby? |
Answer: Lots of breastfeeding mothers have asked us this question. And there are many right answers. Here are some ideas for you to reflect on. First, we need to remember that breastfeeding for any length of time, no matter how short or long, is good for both you and your baby. And, both you and your child will reap health benefits from breastfeeding throughout your lives, even after you wean. Second, what do the experts recommend? The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until your child is two years old or older. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding until your child is at least one year old, and longer if both mother and child want to. Third, it is also important to consider what is “normal” for humans as mammals. Modern society has interfered with the natural process of breastfeeding. In other cultures where breastfeeding is accepted and supported, the typical weaning age is between 2 and 4 years old. Evidence from studies of mammals that are most like humans, primates, indicate a natural weaning age between 2 and 7 years old. Because we have been socialized to think of the breasts primarily as sexual objects, some people are uncomfortable with the idea of nursing an older child. However, think how different your reaction would be if you had been raised in a breastfeeding culture where every mother breastfed and you had seen older children nursing routinely. It is time we remembered that breastfeeding is the normal way to feed our children, and weaning at a very young age may not be normal at all. There are many mothers that nurse older children, but in our society they have to hide it. Finally, remember that only you and your family can decide how long you want to breastfeed. Each family’s situation is different with the birth of each new child. Educate yourself and trust your own judgement. You are the expert on your baby. Don’t let anyone discourage you from doing what you feel is right. Know that we are here to support you in finding the natural course of breastfeeding for you and your child. by Dixie Whetsell |
